IN WONDERFUL RONDA
The wines of this mountainous area in the south of the province of Malaga are quite new on the international market, but the wine tradition of the territory, spreading high up in the mountains right over Costa del Sol, is as ancient as the city of Ronda, dating back to the Romans.
Ronda offers an excellent Wine Route and the “Bodegas” or Wineries located in La Serranía de Ronda between the municipalities of Ronda, Arriate and Gaucín, is surrounded by the exceptional natural spaces Grazalema, Sierra de las Nieves and Los Alcornocales.

Influenced by the proximity of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, the Serranía de Ronda presents a great diversity of microclimate that, together with its geological diversity, gives its wines a good part of its uniqueness. The wine production of the route is integrated into the designation of origin “Málaga. Sierras de Málaga”.
The wines from the area are exactly like Ronda itself, monumental, patient, and full of history and taste. Both the white and the red wines produced in the region are generally fruity and the aromas are attenuated when they are aged, gaining complexity. In the mouth, when tasting them, they are wines with volume, with good taste and persistence.
The white wines have a straw yellow colour with greenish reflections, which is more golden in aged wines. The reds range from violet red to a ruby or red tile colour when they have a long ageing. Rosé wine is pretty rare in this region.
The sunbathed grapes that are giving a new character to the wines in and around the area of Ronda are principally Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Syrah and the appreciated Spanish wine grapes Tempranillo and Garnacha.
You can enjoy the experience of wandering among the wine yards in Ronda and learning from the winemakers, experience wine tasting as an expert, or just spend a wonderful day doing something different on your holidays that you will remember forever.
A curiosity is that what always has been known as “Malaga Wine” is a sweet Moscatel desert wine that has a typical taste of raisins, but somehow tasting similar to Martini. Malaga Wine is very typical in the municipally of Manilva on Costa del Sol and is often home made on farms in the area, and sold on local markets and on the farms.
The Route of the Wineries and Wines of the Serranía de Ronda includes around 20 wineries that can be visited. Together with these, you can visit the Wine Interpretation Centre and the Integral Wine Centre Museum in Ronda. To visit the wine yards (bodegas) you need to pre-book an appointment, or to join a tour arranged by a travel agency. September is without doubt the best month to visit the wine yards, when they harvest the mature grapes and start making the wines.
