In some places in the world being a vegetarian traveller can be quite a problem, which is not the case in Spain, and especially not on Costa del Sol.

Vegetables and olive oil

It might be less common to meet vegetarian and vegan people in Spain than in the rest of the world, most Spaniards just crave for all kinds of meat, fish, seafood and of course Spanish Serrano or Iberico ham and Manchego cheese tapas when drinking a glass of wine or a cold beer. Even so, Spain is the perfect place for vegetarians and vegans with a wide range of fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables matured under the Mediterranean sun and cuisine based on traditional regional resources.

The Olive Oil Kingdom: Spain almost always offers vegan alternatives!

Okay, Spain is not a fanatic vegetarian or vegan country, but if you choose to order vegetables when eating at a local restaurant or bar you can in most cases be sure that there is no butter or cream on your plate. Spanish cooking is based on vegetable oils, mainly pure olive oil.

Most restaurants on Costa del Sol serve vegetarian or vegan alternatives. If they don’t have special dishes you can order some lovely prepared vegetables or a nice salad. Nothing you eat at a Spanish restaurant (apart from animals or fish) usually contains butter or cream except typical Italian dishes like pizza, “spaghetti carbonara”, or dishes served with classic French sauces.
